I became a member of the Illawarra Byrnes Branch of the Hibbs Family when I married David John Christian. The Byrnes family have lived in the Illawarra since the early 1890's - and the Smith's even earlier.
David's grandmother, Mary Ann Byrnes, had left the Illawarra to work in Sydney, and then married Godfrey Christian (Tiearney), in the early 1920's. And half a century later, in 1971, David came "back" to be a Steelworks Metallurgy University Trainee and has remained ever since.
David has been researching the family history since 1997 and this blog shows some of his discoveries, including the First Fleet Sailor - Peter Hibbs connection. David knew of the many red-headed Byrnes aunts in Wollongong - and we've discovered other Illawarra Hibbs descendants whom we had known for years ... literally "under our noses".
